When to mow We do not recommend mowing in the heat of the day because the underlying moisture can more readily be dried up by the direct sunshine. It is important to note here that you can mow your lawn any time during the day. Your grass will only burn if you cut it too short. If you decide to mow at midday on a sunny afternoon, be sure to water your lawn for about 10 to 15 minutes to replenish the moisture. Frequency In the summer time, with St. Augustine grass, we recommend mowing every 4 to 5 days if you use a mulching mower. If you use a bag, then once a week may be sufficient. For Zoysia or Bermuda grass, once every 7 to 10 days is sufficient. Height Setting of Mower This is extremely important in maintaining a beautiful, green lawn throughout the summer months. Set your mower at or one notch below its highest setting. This prevents the roots from being exposed to the hot summer sun! Cutting your lawn at or near the highest setting on your mower also allows the beauty of your grass to show. The result is a deeper green! Contrary to popular belief, the height that you set your mower will not determine how frequently you cut it. Some people are under the misconception that cutting their yard at at shorter length will mean that they will not have to mow it as often. Indirectly, they are correct...they won't have anything to cut...it will be burned up! Keep your mower blade sharp. Observe the grass top edges, they should be straight and not jagged or ripped. Remember: Try not cut more than half the height of your grass off when you mow. Cutting one-third of the height of the grass blade is best. Let this be the rule...and not the exception. |
